Margaret Ann Swingle, age 85, of Erwin, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at the Shannondale Health Care Center, Knoxville, TN. Her last days were spent mostly in Erwin and Johnson City surrounded by her beloved mountains. She died a peaceful death, feeling the presence of loved ones who were with her during her final days. She was the daughter of the late James Vincent and Viola Ruth Ervin Swingle. She was born in Johnson City, TN and the family moved to Erwin when she was very young. Ms. Swingle was a graduate of East Tennessee State University and a former school teacher who retired from the Sullivan County school system. After retirement she returned to Erwin and cared for her mother and aunts. She was active in the Parnassus book club and was a member of the Erwin Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School. She was an intelligent, kind and gentle person who valued her family and her heritage. Her grandfather David Jasper Newton Ervin donated land for the founding of the town of Ervin (later mistakenly renamed Erwin). In addition to her parents, Margaret is preceded in death by her brother, Dr. George David Swingle. . Margaret Swingle has left behind to cherish her memories: Nephew Rocky Swingle, Nieces Lauren Langston, Susan Kimberlain, and Marjorie Van Doren, all of Knoxville, several great nieces and great nephews and one great great niece, numerous cousins including Jim Hartsell of Tulsa OK, and Linda Hartsell of Johnson City, and her dear friend Ray Barcel.The family requests the honor of your presence as we honor and remember the life of Margaret Ann Swingle in a funeral service to be held at 12:00 PM, Wednesday, July 2 2014, at the Erwin Presbyterian Church, 105 N. Elm St. Erwin, TN 37650. Reverend Stanley N. Webster will be officiating. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at Erwin Presbyterian Church. A Committal service will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
