Margaret Ann Swingle, age 85, of Erwin, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at the Shannondale Health Care Center, Knoxville, TN. Her last days were spent mostly in Erwin and Johnson City surrounded by her beloved mountains. She died a peaceful death, feeling the presence of loved ones who were with her during her final days. She was the daughter of the late James Vincent and Viola Ruth Ervin Swingle. She was born in Johnson City, TN and the family moved to Erwin when she was very young. Ms. Swingle was a graduate of East Tennessee State University and a former school teacher who retired from the Sullivan County school system. After retirement she returned to Erwin and cared for her mother and aunts. She was active in the Parnassus book club and was a member of the Erwin Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School. She was an intelligent, kind and gentle person who valued her family and her heritage. Her grandfather David Jasper Newton Ervin donated land for the founding of the town of Ervin (later mistakenly renamed Erwin). In addition to her parents, Margaret is preceded in death by her brother, Dr. George David Swingle. . Margaret Swingle has left behind to cherish her memories: Nephew Rocky Swingle, Nieces Lauren Langston, Susan Kimberlain, and Marjorie Van Doren, all of Knoxville, several great nieces and great nephews and one great great niece, numerous cousins including Jim Hartsell of Tulsa OK, and Linda Hartsell of Johnson City, and her dear friend Ray Barcel.The family requests the honor of your presence as we honor and remember the life of Margaret Ann Swingle in a funeral service to be held at 12:00 PM, Wednesday, July 2 2014, at the Erwin Presbyterian Church, 105 N. Elm St. Erwin, TN 37650. Reverend Stanley N. Webster will be officiating. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at Erwin Presbyterian Church. A Committal service will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Erwin Presbyterian Church.Condolences and memories may be shared with the family and viewed at www.valleyfuneralhome.net. Mrs. Swingle was my 2nd grade teacher and was my favorite teacher. She was always sweet and kind and made you feel special. She will be missed.

I was saddened to hear of Margaret Ann's passing but glad to hear that it was peaceful. I remember her as always being cheerful and ready to help others on a moment's notice. She and my mother (Virginia Swingle Logan) were always good friends as well as cousins. I remember her helpfulness after my mother's stroke. She will be missed.

I was saddened to read of Margaret's death in our paper today. I became acquainted with Margaret when I was president of the Sullivan County Retired Teachers' Association. She was certainly a lovely lady and I enjoyed talking with her at the meetings. She came to me at the first meeting I conducted as president and told me who she was and that she lived in Erwin and enjoyed attending the meetings. From that time on she and I always spoke at the meetings that she attended.

I am so sorry to hear that Margaret Ann passed away. I have such fond memories of Margaret Ann who was very close with my mom Virginia Swingle Logan. On my return trips from Florida, many times Margaret Ann would join us for a holiday dinner. Such a delightful and caring person.

I remember I was looking thru some old books of Acts of Tennessee and saw where one was signed by DJN Ervin which upon a return trip, my mom and dad went out to the rock house and I gave her the book - she was of course very appreciative.

when I was very small and staying at my grandmothers house (Mrs A.E. Swingle) Uncle Vent was there painting their house. I remember smelling the turpentine and Uncle Vent said that he like to put it in his coca cola. I'm sure after he told me that he was smart enough to hide it because I was dumb enough to try it.

I feel very blessed to have known Margaret Ann, Aunt Ruth and Uncle Vent and be a member of the Swingle family. The world was made a better place because of them.
