Obit for Carolyn Duncan Miller September 29, 1929- January 25, 2008 Erwin - Carolyn Duncan Miller, 78, formerly of Roy Duncan Lane, passed away peacefully January 25th following a lengthy illness. Ms. Miller was a resident at the Center on Aging and Health. Ms. Miller was the beloved mother of Daniel Gentry Miller, daughter-in-law Mary Ellen Miller and grandmother to Skyler Robert Miller. She is also survived by one sister Retha Sproles, her husband Sam Sproles, one step-daughter, Linda Shallenberger, as well as several aunts and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother Nell Malone Duncan and her father, Robert Roy Duncan. A career woman, Ms. Miller was a former legal secretary, court reporter and licensed insurance agent. Ms. Miller closed out her professional career in applied electrical engineering for ITT Electric, Ericson Corporation and I-Tech. She received her higher education at Northeast State and East Tennessee State University. Her engineering career took her to residences in Dallas, TX. Huntsville, AL. and Raleigh, N.C. She returned to Erwin several years ago to care for her ailing father. Ms. Miller was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church in Erwin, Tenn. An avid gardener and reader, she was also a regular contributor to the American Red Cross, donating to their blood and Aphersis programs. Fluent in sign language, she was an interpreter for the deaf at churches in every locality in which she worshiped. The family will receive friends at Valley Funeral Home in Erwin from 5:30-7:30 pm Monday, January 28th with the funeral service immediately following at 7:30 pm. The Rev. Tim Bennett will officiate. Graveside service will be held at 10 am Tuesday, January 29th at Roselawn Cemetery. A procession will gather at Valley Funeral Home at 9:30 am. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to Adventa Hospice, 684 Highway 91, Elizabethton, TN 37643. Online condolences may be shared at www.valleyfuneralhome.net.
