Jo Ann Starnes

August 19, 1928 - June 1, 2020

Jo Ann (Adkins) Starnes, age 91, of Erwin, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2020 at Hillview Health Center in Elizabethton. Born in Freemont, VA on August 19, 1928 she is a daughter of the late Willard Martin and Clara (Rose) Adkins. Jo Ann was a loving housewife. She loved quilting, loved her quilt girls and was very proud of her work. If you ever visited with her and you didn’t know how to sew you would leave with a needle, thread and fabric. Mrs. Starnes judged at fairs and taught quilting. She was the Piecemaker’s President and a member of Jo’s Girls. In addition to her parents, Jo Ann is preceded in death by her son, Troy Cecil “Rusty” Starnes, Jr., granddaughter, Lori Ann Starnes, brother, Bob Adkins, and two sisters, Charlene Guss and Doris Deihl. Jo Ann (Adkins) Starnes leaves behind to cherish her memory: Daughters: Shirley Lewis and husband, Kenneth, Judy Gail Bennett and husband, Keith; Daughter-in-law: Elizabeth Starnes; Grandchildren: Joanna Leigh Haun and husband, Randy, Chad Bennett and wife, Cheryl, Timothy Wayne Lewis and wife, Dee, Bonnie Starnes Natalie Starnes, Ashley Starnes, Daisy Carathers and husband, Jacob, Rusty Noah Starnes, Katie Edwards and husband, Rusty; Great-grandchildren: Jake Haun Megan Haun, Carter Edwards, Derrick Edwards; Step Great-granddaughter: Haley Deery; 5 Great Great-grandchildren. The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Jo Ann (Adkins) Starnes in a memorial service to be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, June 12, 2020 in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home. Eulogies will be provided by Jo’s Girls’ Quilt Club. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 12:00 pm and will continue until service time on Friday, in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home. A committal service will be held following the memorial service on Friday in Evergreen Cemetery. Those attending should meet at Valley Funeral Home by 1:00 pm to go in procession.
