Lawrence Cooper

Lawrence Cooper, age 87, passed away on Tuesday January 23, 2018 at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. A native of Poplar, NC, Lawrence is a son of the late Charlie and Essie (Peterson) Cooper. He was a member of Erwin Church of God and enjoyed helping make apple butter and helping with maintenance at the church. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Korean War. He was employed by the VA Medical Center as a cook. Lawrence enjoyed gardening and loved helping his neighbors and taking care of his family. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by his brothers, Briscoe Cooper and Cicero Cooper, and two cousins, Mack Cooper and Eston Cooper. Lawrence Cooper has left behind to cherish his memory: Wife of 62 years: Barbara (Adkins) Cooper, of Erwin; Son: Larry Cooper and wife, Kathy, of Erwin; Daughter: Teresa Starnes, of Monroe, NC; Granddaughter: Lauren Starnes, of Monroe, NC; Sister-in-law: Edna Cooper, of Erwin; Several nieces and nephews.The family would like to offer special thanks to the VA Medical center staff, ICU staff and especially to nurse, Chris.The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Lawrence Cooper in a funeral service to be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 26, 2018 in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home. Bishop John Edwards will officiate. Musical selections will be provided by Gary Ollis. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will be from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Thursday, January 25, 2018 in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home. A committal service with military honors will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018 immediately following the funeral service in Evergreen Cemetery. Those attending the committal service will meet at Valley Funeral Home by 11:00 AM on Friday to go in procession. Those serving as pallbearers will be: David Peterson, Jerry Peterson, Gary Ollis, Eric Casey, Mike Harris and Greg Tittle.
