John L. "Pete" Murray, 89, 101 McInturff Springs Road, Erwin, TN, died Sunday, June 17, 2007 at Erwin Health Center. He was a native of Flag Pond, Tennessee and was the son of the late Landon Murray and Judy Tilson. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the U.S. DD386 destroyer in the Pacific. He was at Pearl Harbor during the Pearl Harbor attack and was an occupant of the ship which was the first to open fire during the attack. He was very proud to have been serving during this time. He was then self-employed with a roofing company for 54 years. He was a member of Foster Seventh Day Adventist Church, Johnson City, TN. He is survived by: Wife: Hazel Tapp; Daughter: Dana Murray, Asheville, NC; Grandchildren: Troy Murray, Asheville, NC, Lisa Murray, Asheville, NC; Step-son: Larry Tilson and wife Linda, Erwin, TN; Step-daughter: Becky Hughes and husband Charles, Knoxville, TN; Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at Two o'clock in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home. Reverend Robert Ambler and Reverend Paul Dixon will officiate. Music will be provided by Pat Stansberry. Visitation will be held two hours prior to service. Graveside services will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers will be John Padgett, Mike Tilson, Steve Williams, Richard Lyle, Ray White, Burl Tilson and Doug Allen. Honorary Pallbearers are Elwood Lyle, J.L. Renfro and Harry Corn.
