Richard S. Smith, age 59, of Unicoi, passed away at the Johnson City Medical Center on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. Richard lived in Unicoi for the last 25 years. He was the son of Robert Smith and Lois Jackson Smith. Richard retired in 2007 after 25 years as an anesthesiologist. He was preceded in death by his father Robert Smith. The remaining family members surviving Richard in addition to his mother are: His wife, Victoria G. Smith of Unicoi; Step-daughters, Jessica Buckles of Johnson City and Rachel Buckles of Blountville; Brother, David Smith of Nashville; Sister, Patty Swartzbaugh of Nashville. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 1, 2009 from six o’clock until eight o’clock in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home. I had the distinct pleasure of working with Dr Smith at ETASC when it was a one OR facility. My background was ER and when I came to ETASC, Dr Smith took me under his wing and helped me transition into the ambulatory surgery arena. He was a good teacher and a kind man. I will always remember his quick wit and smiling face.
I send my deepest sympathy to Vicki and the rest of Dr Smith's family.
Dr. Smith will be missed by all. He was a fun guy to be around. He was a good friend and I will never look at Ketchup in the same way again thanks to him. He gave his time to Fresh Start of which I personally appreciated. And Dr Smith I still see you doing that silly Da Ha grin you always did went you made a suttle funny. May GOD bless you Dr. Smith and comfort your family and friends.

I am sending my deepest sympathies to you and other family members. I worked with Dr. Smith at ETASC for about 2 years. I so loved to work with him. He was a very kind and caring man with a great sense of humor. He was also a really good anesthiologist whom I had much respect for. He always played "Monday, Monday" by the mamas and papas at just the right time every monday during a Dr. Brantner case. I remember one time when I first started working there, a cysto patient peed on me when I was getting their legs out of stirrups and he found my predicament very funny! I continue to miss him to this day. We can rejoice in knowing that he is no longer suffering from his earthly sickness. I pray for God's peace and comfort for you during this time and regret I could not give my condolances in person.
